Oz takes a detour, weekend

Sugar Museum tour

Tours are conducted at Alexander & Baldwin’s Sugar Museum Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The museum has exhibits about sugar plantation history during its 168 years on Maui and the waves of immigrant laborers who came to the Hawaiian Islands, including the Chinese, Japanese, Puerto Rican, Portuguese, and Filipino. Hawaiian artists exhibit

The Schaeffer International Gallery continues exhibiting the art touring show “O Kalani,” featuring Hawaiian artists Sean Browne and Imaikalani Kalahele. The exhibit is open to the public through June 18 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday. The works are a traveling exhibition through the partnership of the Maui Arts & Cultural Center and the Honolulu Museum of Art presented by textile and fashion curator E. Tory Laitila. It exhibits paintings and sculptures, including the portrayal of legendary figures, using Hawaiian iconography in contemporary ways. Admission is free. For more information, call 808-242-2787.

Singer/song writer Anthony Pfluke, sometimes with guest performers, entertains at Nalu’s Friday, May 13, from 7 to 9 p.m. Pfluke’s album “We Will Rise” has been reviewed well and was a finalist in the Nā Hōkū Hanohano awards. The music of Brahms, Mozart, Shumann, Shubert, Bottesini, Dvorak, Hadyn, and Gliere is featured in the Maui Classical Music Festival in May, beginning Friday.

Maui Classical Music Festival, May 13-22

The Maui Classical Music Festival begins its series of concerts at Makawao Union Church Friday, May 13, at 7 p.m., opening with Reinhold Gliere’s “Three Duets for Violin and Cello, Opus 39 with violinist Sarah Oates and cellist Amir Eldan.
The program continues with Joseph Hadyn’s Piano Trio #39 in G, Hob. XV:25 “Gypsy” with violinist Sara Oates, cellist Amir Eldan and pianist Anna Palonsky, then to Giovani Bottesini’s Grand Duo Concertante for Violin, Double Bass and Piano with violinist Fabiola Kim, double bass Kurt Muroki, and pianist Anna Polonsky.
The final piece is Antonin Dvorak’s Sting Quartet in F, Opus 96 “American” with violinist Benny Kim, Sarah Oates, Yizhak Schotten on viola, and cellist Amir Eldan.
The concert continues with performances of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Franz Schubert and Johannes Brahms at Keawala’i Congregational Church in Makena Monday, May 16, at 7 p.m., of Mozart and Dvorak at Wananalua Congregational church in Hana on Wednesday, May 18, at 6 p.m., of Robert Schumann and Brahms at Keawalai Congregational Church in Makena on May 20 at 7 p.m. and May 22 at 3 p.m.

Hui Noeaʻu juried exhibit
