“Bergman Island” (Criterion)
Mia Hansen-Løve has been earning raves for her most recent drama, “1 Fine Early morning,” but I like this 2021 puzzle box of a film, one that fascinatingly unpacks creative inspiration. In this film, Chris (the constantly wonderful Vicky Krieps) and Tony Sanders (Tim Roth) journey to the infamous island of Faro, wherever Ingmar Bergman worked, lived, and set some of his movies. Tony admires Bergman, but Chris is fewer infatuated with the filmmaking icon, partly simply because of his remedy of girls. She explores the island even though performing on a screenplay about a lady (Mia Wasikowska, offering just one of the greatest performances of her job) who travels to the island for a wedding ceremony and fulfills a man (Anders Danielsen Lie). The Criterion version of this character-driven drama incorporates new interviews with both of those the director and star, along with a brief film shot all through the creation by Gabe Klinger (“Porto”).

“Bones and All”
Luca Guadagnino, the director of “Phone Me by Your Name” and “Suspiria,” sent just one of his most divisive movies in this tale of younger cannibals in love. Making use of the practice of feeding on human flesh as an allegorical leaping-off point for outsiders, “Bones and All” is the tale of Maren Yearly (the excellent Taylor Russell), who flees modern society when her father can no lengthier deal with the fact that she’s a cannibal. On the street, she meets two adult men: the bizarrely unsettling Sully (Mark Rylance, heading all-in) and the supportive Lee (Timothee Chalamet). What unfolds is a daring coming-of-age story that will be rewatched and reappraised significantly additional than numerous of the most acclaimed films of 2022.
